Help Me Celebrate My 50th Year of
Living with Diabetes
While it may not sound like much of a feat to most, if
you know anything about diabetes and the complications the disease can cause you
know that living with diabetes for 50 years without major complications is
definitely something to celebrate. Just look at what happening to people with
diabetes on a daily basis.
Diabetes Statistics
Each day:
·
4000 new cases of diabetes are
diagnosed.
· 600 people die from diabetes
complications.
·
200 people undergo an amputation due to diabetes.
·
100 cases of kidney failure occur
due to diabetes
These statistics were grimly uttered by Ann Albright,
Director of the Division of Diabetes Translation for the Center for Disease
Control (CDC).Additionally she said that “of the children born in America in 2000,
one in three will develop diabetes in their lifetime.”
Not much reason to celebrate right? But for me things have
been a bit different. I have had diabetes
since I was 3 1/2 years old. Now I'm
almost fifty-four and am celebrating my 50th year anniversary as a
diabetic, without major complications. On
August 22nd, 2009, I
will officially have had type 1 diabetes for 50 years.
What’s so special about living for 50 years with diabetes?
Since 1970, Joslin
Diabetes
Center
has only just a few over 2400 people worldwide who have documented 50 years of
diabetic living. Roughly one-third of those with diabetes die of heart attacks
before they reach the age of 50, much less live 50 or more years as a diabetic.
Others suffer with complications of
diabetes such as kidney failure, heart disease, amputations, blindness, and
diabetic neuropathy.
I'm living proof that diabetes can be controlled and
complications can be avoided. So here is how I'm celebrating.
I've written a short e-book called Beat Diabetes
Daily. With this book I can share my knowledge of living with
diabetes I want to serve as a mentor to others with diabetes AND
to motivate diabetics to learn more about diabetes and take control of their
health.
