Blood Glucose High - When to Take Action
and What to Do
Every diabetic will occasionally have a high glucose reading.
In most cases, a one-time occurrence is no reason to get extremely
excited. If you have highs on a
regular basis, it is time to take action.
Evaluate
the Timing
Checking blood sugar on a daily basis four times a day will help
you identify times of day and frequency of high sugar levels.
Once you know when and how long your blood sugar is high, you can
begin to take corrective measures to get blood sugar normal.
Identify
the Cause
As you probably already know, your blood sugar goes high when
there is not enough insulin present to allow the body to burn the glucose in
your blood for energy.
Excessive glucose in your blood can come from a variety of reasons.
1)
You are
eating too much
2)
You are not
exercising enough
3)
Medications
you are taking may raise your blood sugar
4)
You need to
adjust your diabetes medications or insulin
Evaluate your last few days of blood sugar readings.
Do you see a pattern?
For example if your blood sugar is high every day before dinner, could it be
you had too big a lunch? Look for
possible causes and make changes to see if you have identified the cause.
Taking
Action
In many cases of consistently high blood sugar, the problem can
be resolved by doing two things.
First is diet
Make sure you are eating a
healthy diet and using proper portion control.
If you need help in this area, you may want to see a dietitian.
Secondly, make sure you are active.
Exercise is a major factor to good diabetes control.
Every diabetic should do some form of exercise on a daily basis.
In many cases, this will resolve the high blood sugars.
The two solutions of eating proper portions of a healthy diet
and getting regular exercise are relatively simple solutions.
Yet, so many do not make the effort to incorporate these two
activities into their lifestyle.
Unfortunately those diabetics who do not usually wind up with
horrible diabetes complications.
Do not become one of the horrible statistics…eat right, check your
blood sugar, and exercise daily.
You’ll be healthier and happier for the efforts.
